When to use a comma

A comma is a piece of punctuation that is used within sentences.

Comma rule #1 = In lists to separate items

Ex: My trousers are black, long and comfortable. (adjectives)

Ex: I went shopping and bought an apple, a banana and a cream cake. (nouns)


Comma rule #2 = Before direct speech

Ex: Mr. Blake said, "Jump higher."


Comma rule #3 = To add 2 sentences together, using a connecting word (and, but, or, so, yet, for)

Ex: We must save electricity, so we should turn off the lights.

Ex: I knew there was a shark, yet I still went swimming.


Comma rule #4 = To separate non-essential information in a sentence

Ex: Bryan, who likes comic books, is a good student.


Comma rules #5 = After an introductory part of the sentence

Ex: Yesterday, I went shopping.

Ex: After I eat lunch, I always take a nap.
